Low Level Laser Therapy – PhotoBioModulation

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), Cold Laser or PhotoBioModulation (PBM)

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), Cold Laser and PhotoBioModulation (PBM) are all terms used to describe the use of specific frequencies and pulses of intense, energized light in the painless treatment of tissue repair, reduction of inflammation and pain relief.   The term Photobiomodulation (PBM) is now the accepted name for this treatment.  These safe and effective treatments only take a few minutes and can be used for both the short-term relief of acute pain as well as safely long-term on chronic conditions and pain relief.

Originally discovered in the 1960’s, more recent research and development has lead to the use of LLLT/PBM now being used in over 70 countries and has been adopted by many institutions including NASA, Harvard Medical School and armed forces in the USA.  In the United Kingdom, The Royal Navy, The British Army, The Royal Air Force, The National Health Service (NHS), BUPA, Premier Division Football teams and British Lions Rugby use LLLT/PBM.

How it works

When cells are stressed, a detrimental chemical reaction within the cells occurs.  Nitric oxide inhibits oxygen consumption by mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase.  This reduces production of ATP and causes oxidative stress leading to increased inflammation and reduced production of ATP. PBM displaces nitric oxide, thereby reducing inflammation and restoring ATP production, helping tissues heal more quickly.

PBM creates a positive chemical change in the cells, similar to photosynthesis in plants and is not a thermal reaction.  Therefore, PBM does not cause any cell damage.   Clinical trials have shown that PBM can produce significant reduction in inflammation equal to or better than NSAID drugs like Ibuprofen, within 2 hours of PBM treatment, with analgesic (pain relief) effects that last for 48 hours and healing time of chronic tendonopathies is reduced by 70%.

The three main areas where LLLT/PBM has proven success are:

  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Joint conditions
  • Back and Neck Pain

LLLT/PBM is also used successfully to treat the following conditions:

  • Shin Splints
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Knee Cartilage Tear
  • Hamstring Strain
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Ankle Sprain
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Lower Leg, Ankle & Foot Lymphoedema
  • Diabetic Ulcer
  • Plantar Warts / Verrruca
  • Gout
  • Osteoarthritis of the Foot
  • Post-operative Nail Avulsion
  • Wound Healing
  • Fungal Nail Infection

The number of LLLT/PBM treatments required will depend upon the specific condition presented.   Contact us to book your appointment , to discuss how Low Level Laser/Photobiomodulation Therapy could help you.
